About the Role
Front-of-Hou Counter Person, is responsible for creating a welcoming and positive experience for every customer who visits La Ruelle Bakery.
This role is at the heart of our customer service and front-of-house operations, including sales, transactions, product presentation, food preparation, and maintaining a clean and welcoming bakery environment. The Bakery Attendant combines excellent interpersonal skills with a passion for great food to help customers discover and enjoy everything La Ruelle has to offer.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service & Sales
- Welcome customers with a friendly and welcoming attitude
- Assist customers with selecting bakery items by providing recommendations, describing products, and offering samples when appropriate
- Take customer orders accurately, including in-store purchases, special orders, and other requests
- Answer customer questions about our products, including ingredients, flavours, and allergen information
- Address customer questions, concerns, and complaints professionally and work toward a positive resolution whenever possible
- Encourage customers to discover additional products through thoughtful recommendations and upselling
Orders & Transactions
- Process cash, card, and electronic payments accurately and securely
- Ensure all transactions are properly recorded
- Maintain responsibility for accurate cash handling and balancing the cash drawer at the end of each shift
Product Presentation & Merchandising
- Package bakery items neatly and attractively for customers and takeaway orders
- Ensure products are properly wrapped and labelled
- Maintain attractive and inviting product displays throughout the day
- Ensure products are correctly labelled with prices and descriptions
- Assist with setting up and decorating displays for special occasions and holidays
- Monitor product levels and restock displays as needed
- Rotate products and remove items as necessary to maintain freshness and quality
Food Preparation & Product Handling
- Assist with basic food preparation and handling tasks as needed
- Prepare items such as sandwiches and fougasse mixes
- Assist with tasks such as cutting cookie dough and bagging croutons or breadcrumbs
- Handle bakery products carefully and follow proper food handling procedures
Cleanliness & Organization
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming customer service area
- Keep display cases, counters, and seating areas clean and presentable
- Clean and sanitize front-of-house and back-of-house areas as required
- Assist with general cleaning tasks, including sweeping and wiping down surfaces
- Help maintain an organized and efficient workspace throughout the day
Food Safety & Collaboration
- Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures, including handwashing and sanitization
- Work closely with bakers and other team members to ensure the bakery runs smoothly
- Communicate clearly and work collaboratively during busy periods
- Assist with other daily tasks as needed to support the bakery team

Training, Qualifications & Other Requirements
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is an asset but not required. Formal education or training in culinary arts, customer service, or a related field is also an asset.
Experience: Previous customer service experience is preferred. Knowledge of bakery products, ingredients, and allergens is an asset.
On-the-Job Training: Previous bakery experience is not required. Training will be provided on our products, cash handling, food preparation tasks, and other skills relevant to the role.
Food Safety Certification: FoodSafe Level 1 certification is an asset but not required.
Working Conditions
- Stand for extended periods throughout the shift
- Work in a busy environment alongside other team members
- Exposure to heat, flour dust, and common food allergens
- Work in both front-of-house and back-of-house areas as needed
Schedule
This position's shifts usually cover the following times:
- Tuesday to Saturday
- Start times vary between 7:30am - 1:30pm and 11:30am - 5:30pm
- Specific scheduling details will be discussed with successful applicants
Wage
The wage for this position starts at $18.25 - $21 + shared tips. Based on experience.
